PRESS RELEASE
The Monsoon Session, 2007 of Parliament which commenced on Friday, the 10th of August, 2007, concluded on Monday, the 10th of September, 2007. The Session was originally scheduled to conclude on Friday, the 14th of September, 2007 but the Houses had to be adjourned sine-die on Monday, the 10th of September, 2007 due to continued disruptions of the Houses. The Session provided 17 sittings of both the Houses of Parliament spread over a period of 32 days.
2. During the Session, Adjournment Motion moved by Shri Prabhunath Singh in the Lok Sabha on 29.8.2007 “regarding the failure of the Government to contain terrorist violence in the country as is evidenced by a series of recent events, the latest being the twin blasts in Hyderabad in which 42 innocent citizens lost their lives and fifty were injured”, was discussed and negatived.
3. Financial Business transacted consists of Supplementary Demands for Grants (General) for 2007-08 and Supplementary Demands for Grants (Railways) for 2007-08 and their Appropriation Bills, which were discussed and passed by the Lok Sabha during the Session. Thereafter, the Rajya Sabha considered and returned these Appropriation Bills.
4. One Bill replacing an Ordinance, namely, the State Bank of India (Amendment) Ordinance, 2007 (No. 5 of 2007), which was promulgated by the President, was considered and passed by both the Houses during the Session.
5. In the Lok Sabha, Short Duration Discussion under Rule 193 and in the Rajya Sabha, Short Duration Discussion under Rule 176 on the flood situation in various parts of the country was taken up.
6. During the Session, 16 Bills (11 in the Lok Sabha and 05 in the Rajya Sabha) were introduced. The Lok Sabha passed 10 Bills and the Rajya Sabha passed 11 Bills during the session. Total number of Bills passed by both Houses of Parliament during the Session is 11. Two Bills, namely, the Competition (Amendment) Bill, 2006 and the Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 1995 were withdrawn in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha respectively.
