PRESS RELEASE
The Monsoon Session, 2006 of Parliament which
commenced on Monday, the 24th of July, 2006, concluded on Friday, the
25th of August, 2006. The Session provided 22 sittings of both the
Houses of Parliament spread over a period of 33 days.
2. During the Session, Adjournment
Motion moved by Shri L. K. Advani, the Leader of Opposition, in the Lok Sabha on
25.7.2006 on “failure of the Government to ensure security of the lives of
innocent citizens from planned terrorist violence in various parts of the
country as has been sharply highlighted by the recent serial bomb blasts in
seven local trains in Mumbai on 11th July, 2006, killing more than
200 persons and injuring over 700”, was discussed and negatived.
3. Financial Business transacted
consists of Supplementary Demands for Grants (General) and (Railways) for
2006-07 and their Appropriation Bills, which were discussed and passed by the
Lok Sabha during the Session. Thereafter, the Rajya Sabha considered and
returned these Appropriation Bills.
4. In the Lok Sabha, Short Duration
Discussions under Rule 193 and in the Rajya Sabha, Short Duration Discussions
under Rule 176, were held on (i) Rise in the prices of essential commodities;
(ii) Widespread distress among the farmers in the country; (iii) Report of the
Justice R.S. Pathak Inquiry Authority and the Action Taken Report thereon laid
on the Table of the House on 7.8.2006; (iv) Indo-US Nuclear Agreement; and (v)
Report of the Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry regarding disappearance of
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
5. During the Session, 15 Bills (8 in
the Lok Sabha and 7 in the Rajya Sabha) were introduced. The Lok Sabha passed
17 Bills and the Rajya Sabha passed 16 Bills during the session.
Total number of Bills passed by both Houses of Parliament during the Session is 17 Bills. One Bill, namely, the Constitution (Eighty-seventh
Amendment) Bill, 1999 was withdrawn in Rajya Sabha. A list containing the
titles of the Bills introduced, and, considered and passed during the Session is
enclosed.
