PRESS RELEASE

 

The first session of the Fourteenth Lok Sabha is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, the 2nd of June, 2004 and the 201st session of the Rajya Sabha is scheduled to commence on Friday, the 4th of June, 2004. Subject to exigencies of Government Business, both Houses are scheduled to conclude their sessions on Thursday, the 10th of June, 2004. The session will provide 7 sittings of the Lok Sabha and 5 sittings of the Rajya Sabha.

2.      The session will mainly be devoted to administration of oath/affirmation to the  Members elected to the Fourteenth Lok Sabha, election for the office of Speaker, Lok Sabha, President’s Address to both Houses of Parliament assembled together and discussion on the Motion of Thanks on President’s Address. As per the provisional programme, the following business is proposed to be transacted in the two Houses during the session:-

3.         On the suggestion of the Prime Minister, the President, under article 95(1) of the Constitution, has  appointed Shri Somnath Chatterjee as Speaker, pro tem to perform the duties of the  office of the Speaker from the commencement of the sitting of the House of the People on 2 June, 2004 until the commencement of the sitting of the House on 4 June, 2004 and  Shri Balasaheb Vikhe Patil as Speaker pro tem from the commencement of the sitting of the House on 4 June, 2004 till the election of the Speaker by the House. Further, on the suggestion of the Prime Minister, the President, under article 99 of the Constitution, has also appointed  S/Shri Somnath Chatterjee, Balasaheb Vikhe Patil, Giridhar Gamang and Manabendra Shah as persons before any of whom the  Members of the House of the People  may make/subscribe oath or affirmation.
